 Honoring Ambrose Kelly
Celebrating a life, supporting a legacy
For more than three decades, Ambrose Kelly (above left) was dedicated to working with South Africans in the Kalahari Desert
On 2 April 2022, talented artists from around the world came together for a charity concert to celebrate three decades of the FIS service-
learning project, The Kalahari Experience and to remember its co-founder and early director, the late Ambrose Kelly. FIS students took to the stage and shared their voices and storytelling skills. The international audience enjoyed the many talents of fellow project collaborators in Australia and was also able to greet partners in South Africa thanks to the efforts of the FIS Media team in arranging a livestream of the event. It was an amazing opportunity for in-house spectators and all those who tuned in to experience the sense of togetherness, purpose and urgency to bring hope to those in need.
Grade 9–12 Assistant Principal Pete Sinclair, who coordinates the Kalahari project and was a close collaborator of Mr. Kelly, remembered his dear friend whose passion for helping others and commitment to improving the lives and educational opportunities of the people of the Moshaweng Valley in South Africa. These were the driving forces that sparked the desire in so many FIS students, their families and community to support and continue the legacy of Mr. Kelly.
During his lifetime, Mr. Kelly poured his heart into many charitable organizations, events and projects throughout the world. When called upon to help, there was no problem too big for him to tackle and he always did so with high spirits and an open heart. Mr. Kelly led projects in his native country, Australia. He flew to Pakistan to run a street school. He was called to India to set up a street orphanage and finally, in 1986, he landed in a remote location in South Africa. It was here, in the Moshaweng Valley, that he was able to combine his natural propensity for bringing people together for a good cause with his love for education and desire to ensure equal opportunities for all.
